Emulating A Professional Photographer
For this assignment, I emulated some works by Lee Friedlander. I covered his career in my Multimodal Presentation and became fascinated by his unique style of street photography. Friedlander's approach to photograph, which primarily revolves around the idea that there are interesting photos around every corner, has changed the way I think about the art form. In addition, his work has opened up the door of inserting myself into my photos. For the three photographs I took, I tried to mimic the way in which Friedlander captured himself. Also, I tried to find inspiration in my immediate surroundings instead of traveling to a destination and searching for worthy subjects. By emulating his work, I learned that there are interesting things to be photographed anywhere. Additionally, he taught me that adding my self portrait to my photos can lead to some cool results.
Your Photographic Voice
About the Final Project
For my final project I decided to take a series of self portraits. After studying and emulating Lee Friedlander, as well as looking into other street photographers, I decided self portraits could be an interesting way to display what I have learned. Many of these photos use techniques I learned from the previous assignments (rule of thirds, side lighting, etc..). Others are obviously heavily inspired by Lee Friedlander. All of which however, are a step towards finding my photographic voice or style. One new thing I messed around with was shooting with a tripod and timer to achieve the behind the shoulder perspective.
Course Goals and Achievements
I began this course with very little experience with photography. I purchased a dslr because I was inspired by the works of Ralph Eugene Meatyard a few months ago. When it arrived at my house I didn't know what to do with it. This course showed me the basics of the craft, as well as how to use my camera. I was also exposed to a large and varied selection of professional photographers, many of which have inspired me in my search for a photographic voice. I still have many areas where I wish to improve so I'm going to keep on shooting and see what happens.
